Haiku #234 - Finale

tour comes to a close
you can't live forever in
a D major chord

The Finale of In the Heights ends on the word "home", sung in a big fat root position D major chord. Early on in the tour, Kurt and I were talking about how it doesn't get much more "home" than a big fat root position major triad, and we have all indeed lived in that chord as much as any hotel room. It's time to move on to other homes and other chords, but this show, and the people involved in it, will always be very special to me. Viva In the Heights

Haiku #233 - Power and Light Disctrict

the streets are filled with
stumbling twenty-one-year-olds
on a Friday night

The Power and Light District is a really hip part of downtown Kansas City - lots of bars and restaurants and clubs etc. Seemed to be quite a young crowd out last night - definitely some people who were in the process of discovering the limits of their alcohol tolerance and ability to walk in stiletto heels. Not exactly my scene, but the infrastructure itself is really cool. Favorite spots: Latteland, Howl at the Moon, Flying Saucer, Gordon Biersch.

Tomorrow is closing night of In the Heights - one more performance at Starlight and then we're all on to the next thing, whatever that may be!

Haiku #232 - Solar System

tour is almost done
seen the whole country, and now
the solar system

There's a really cool walkable scale solar system in downtown Kansas City, with the celestial bodies represented by factoid exhibits spaced proportionate distances from the "sun":

Tee hee! Yes, I know - am I twelve? (apparently.)

Haiku #231 - Real American K.C.

K.C. in K.C.
can tell you what beer to drink
I joined the beer club!

K.C. was our waitress last night when I (finally!) got to Kansas City after (more) travel delays. She was awesome, and $3 pint night at the Flying Saucer is awesome.

6 more chances to see In the Heights!

Haiku #230 - All-You-Can-Eat Sushi!

BEFORE
so many fishies
that were swimming in the sea
now in my belly!

Kyle and Dom had the help of 6 other people for demolish that sushi....
Alex took us (me, Cherie, Kyle, Dom, 5ive, Perry, and Virginia) to her favorite sushi joint here in her home state of Connecticut. We made two trips in her car to get there from the hotel, and on the way back, we piled our sushi-filled bodies in there, clown-car style, for the short ride back.  Have to ask her to remind me the name of the place, because I can't remember... it was really good!

Haiku #229 - New Haven, CT

such great energy
in the audience tonight
ev'ryone was there

We had a lot of In the Heights VIPs in the house last night - Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alex Lacamoire, Karen Olivo, our producers, a bunch of Lin's family and friends... we had a party afterwards. A particularly great show and a great night. My friend and faithful blog-reader Bear was able to come up from the city to see the show for the first time, and meet some of the people he's read about!

Bear (right) said he felt like he already knew Kurt & Cherie from reading my haiku!

Haiku #228 - Morgantown, WV?

few hours, did a show
that's why I still know nothing
about Morgantown

We were delayed a day because of weather, so we saw less of Morgantown even than other places we've done one show!

New Haven all weekend!
